Saint Maximilian Mary Kolbe, pray for us!

Early in 1941, you wrote in The Knight of the Immaculata:

"No one in the world can change Truth.
What we can do and should do is to seek truth
and to serve it when we have found it.
The real conflict is the inner conflict.
Beyond armies of occupation and
the hecatombs of extermination camps,
there are two irreconcilable enemies
in the depth of every soul:
good and evil, sin and love.
And what use are the victories on the battlefield
if we ourselves are defeated
in our innermost personal selves?"

French translation (my own):

Personne au monde ne peut changer la vérité.
Ce que nous pouvons et devons faire
C’est de chercher la vérité
Et la servir quand on l’a trouvé.
Le vrai conflit est le conflit intérieur.
Par-delà les armées d’occupations et
Les hécatombes des camps d’extermination,

I like this quote re: truth, the pursuit of truth and the moral, ethical life!

I find it invigorating and encouraging to hear it and hear about his life and death, in such dramatic circumstances. I am well aware that I have not known anything close to it but I also think that ethics (and politics, and esthetics, and scientific pursuits... and scrolling on social platforms, any kind of our choices, any decisions made on a daily bases requires a movement of the will and of the conscience for the good or for the bad, for ourselves and for others. Ethics RULE!

It is also true that the conscience needs to be formed and refined and re-examined constantly, we do not have the same "rules of morality" at 16 than at 36, or even 60! And "organized religion" as it is sometimes called - with a suspicious tone... is the best place to start. You can constantly get help and support:

1. from the liturgy,
2. from a life of prayer,
3. from the communion of saints,
4. from the Living Word,
5. from the sacrament of the Eucharist,
6. from the sacrament of Reconciliation,
7. from the members of the community to which you belong (the parish)!

MORT A AUSCHWITZ: A la fin de juillet 1941, un prisonnier du bloc 14, celui du Père Maximilien, s'est évadé. Le chef de camp avait prévenu que, pour chaque évadé, dix hommes seraient condamnés à mourir de faim et de soif. Un des malheureux désignés pour la mort s'écrie: "Oh! ma pauvre femme et mes enfants que je ne reverrai plus!" Alors, au milieu de ses camarades interdits, le Père Maximilien se fraie un chemin et sort des rangs. "Je voudrais mourir à la place d'un de ces condamnés", et il désigne celui qui vient de se lamenter. "Qui es-tu?" demande le chef. "Prêtre catholique", répond le Père. Car c'est comme prêtre catholique qu'il veut donner sa vie. L'officier, stupéfait, garde un moment le silence puis accepte l'héroïque proposition.

Saint Maximilian Kolbe, frère franciscain polonais, prêtre, mort le 14 août 1941 à Auschwitz.
Il donne sa vie pour sauver celle d’un autre prisonnier, le sergent Franciszek Gajowniczek.
Celui-ci survécu et consacra le reste de sa vie à témoigner du sacrifice du Père Kolbe.
Le sergeant Franciszek Gajowniczek a assisté à la cérémonie de canonisation
par sa Sainteté le Pape Jean-Paul II le 10 octobre 1982.
Franciszek Gajowniczek décéda à l’âge de 94 ans en 1995.
