   Veni Sancte Spiritus

The Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit
are the permanent dispositions
which help us live the Christian life

These specific dispositions help us follow the promptings of the Holy Spirit.
They complete and perfect the virtues of those who receive them.

How many are there and what are they?

These are the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit:
Wisdom - Understanding - Counsel - Fortitude - Knowledge - Piety - Fear of the Lord

Why are the Gifts of the Holy Spirit important for us?

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are important for us because they help us:
- to make wise decisions about important matters,
- to understand the real meaning of life,
- to advise and help others to make the right decisions,
- to be strong to uphold and do what is right and to condemn and avoid what is wrong,
- to know the teaching of God and our true destiny,
- to give true worship and praise to God,
- to fear offending God who is our loving Father
.

What are the Fruits of the Holy Spirit?

The Fruits of the Holy Spirit are the virtues produced in our lives when we exercise the Gifts of the Holy Spirit.

How many Fruits are there and what are they?

There are twelve Fruits of the Holy Spirit:
Charity, Joy, Peace,
Patience, Kindness, Goodness,
Generosity, Gentleness, Faithfulness,
Modesty, Self-control and Chastity.

When will we know that we are producing these Fruits in our lives?

We will know we are producing these Fruits in our lives when we are:
loving, joyful, peaceful,
patient, kind, good,
generous, gentle, faithful, modest,
when we exercise self-control and when we are chaste and pure.

LATIN English en Français;
my own translation to French

Veni, Sancte Spiritus,
Et emitte caelitus,
Lucis tuae radium.

Veni, pater pauperum,
Veni, dator munerum,
Veni, lumen cordium.

Consolator optime,
Dulcis hospes animae,
Dulce refrigerium.

In Labore requies,
In aestu temperies,
in fletu solatium.

O Lux beatissima,
Reple cordis intima
Tuorum fidelium.

Sine tuo numine,
Nihil est in homine,
Nihil est innoxium.

Lava quod est sordidum,
Riga quod est aridum,
Sana quod est saucium.

Flecte quod est rigidum,
Fove quod est frigidum
Rege quod est devium.

Da tuis fidelibus,
In te confidentibus,
Sacrum septenarium.

Da virtutis meritum,
Da salutis exitum,
Da perenne gaudium.
Amen. Alleluia.

Holy Spirit, God of love,
Come and let fall from above,
Ray of your light.

Father come to those in need,
Come rewarding every deed,
Light of our hearts.

You the one who best consoles,
You most welcome guest of souls,
Refuge and rest.

Respite in the toil of life,
Subduer of the passion's strife,
Comfort in grief.

Light, which blessedness imparts,
Fill the inmost core of hearts,
Faithful and true.

In your absence all is pain,
Man's endeavor all in vain,
Harmful all things.

What is soiled, wash again,
What is arid, bless with rain,
What wounded, heal.

Warm again the love grown cold,
What unyielding, shape and mold
What wayward, rule.

Give, to the faithful hearts confessing,
Gifts beyond all else possessing,
Sevenfold worth.

Crown the strivings of the soul.
Give, when we have reached the goal,
Joy evermore.
Amen. Alleluia

Viens, Esprit Saint
Et des cieux envoies
Tes rayons de lumière.

Viens, Père des pauvres,
Viens, source de nos dons,
Viens, lumière des cœurs.

Le meilleur des consolateurs
Espérance douce de l'âme
Douceur rafraîchissante.

Le repos du travailleur,
Modération des passions,
Soulagement des affligés.

O lumière la plus heureuse
Pénètre les replis intimes
De nos cœurs fidèles a toi

Sans toi, il n'y a rien,
Rien qui soit dans l'homme
Rien qui soit innocent.

LAVE ce qui est sordide
ARROSE ce qui est aride
GUÉRIS ce qui est bléssé

FLÉCHIS ce qui est rigide
RÉCHAUFFE ce qui est frigide
REDRESSE ce qui est dévié.

A tous ceux qui te sont fidèles,
Qui te font confiance,
Au septuple, sanctifies-les.

Donne le mérite des vertus,
A la fin le salut,
la joie pour l'éternité!
Amen. Alléluia

I cannot stress enough how valuable this prayer is! again and again, for myself, for others, it is a complete and abundant blessing!

There is a terrific section in the CCC on the Holy Spirit,
with clears explanations and precise illustrations of the role of
the Holy Spirit within the Most Holy Trinity:
from the Credo: "I believe in the Holy Spirit":
§683 to 686 Here and also §733 to 747
